Read our Winter The American Bar Association recently changed its definition of a paralegal. The change eliminated the words "legal assistant" from the definition. See the entire revised definition below. WHAT IS A PARALEGAL? "A [legal assistant or] paralegal is a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible." The words in red above were removed in Feburary 2020 from the definition of a paralegal by the American Bar Association's policy making body, the House of Delegates. The recommendation to remove the words "legal assistant or" was made by the ABA's Standing Committee on Paralegals. Please visit our Resources page for more information. |
